MercyCare was privileged to present Gill Hicks at our 2015 Oration held on Thursday, 24 September at the Hyatt Regency’s grand ballroom.
Gill is known globally as a survivor of the 2005 London terrorist bombings and has gone on to forge a remarkable life. Standing only a few steps away from the suicide bomber on the Kings Cross train that fateful day, Gill lost both her legs from below the knee and suffered such severe injuries she was not expected to live.
There are few people who can speak about a traumatic event in such an engaging and uplifting way as Gill. Equally, there are few people who have endured such unimaginable trauma and been able to rejoice and celebrate just being alive. Her appreciation and gratitude was infectious and offered a brilliant reminder of just how precious our lives are.
Nearly 500 guests attended the evening, including Her Excellency, the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AO, Governor of Western Australia; the Most Reverend Donald Sproxton, Auxiliary Bishop of Perth (representing the Archbishop of Perth); the Honourable Tony Simpson MLA, Minister for Local Government, Community Services, Seniors and Volunteering and Youth (representing the Premier of Western Australia) as well as representatives from the MercyCare Board and Trustees, the Sisters of Mercy and our Partners whose generous support make the Oration possible. We were honoured to have Barry McGuire open the evening with a moving and deeply personal Welcome to Country.
In her speech, Gill touched on the parallel between her experience and the values that drive MercyCare.
“So many have made such a difference, such a contribution to my quality of life. It is this care, this dedication to the rebuilding and repositioning of me into a place of absolute strength and independence that resonates with the work so brilliantly done by MercyCare,” she reflected.
Gill’s triumph in the face of such tragedy is a true embodiment of MercyCare’s guiding values of Respect, Courage, Compassion, Integrity, Excellence and Justice which underpin our Vision for people and communities to thrive.
