COMPASSION IN ACTION

Compassion in Action Logo

MercyCare's Compassion in Action Project Team is dedicated to raising funds for those less fortunate than ourselves.

Whilst the aftermath of the Tsunami in Sri Lanka has been long-forgotten in the news, there are still thousands of people suffering day-to-day to simply find food and shelter and restore normality to the devastated region.

Here at MercyCare we haven’t forgotten their plight.

MercyCare’s Compassion in Action Project Team has made a long-term commitment to provide aid to Sri Lanka and to make as big a difference to the lives of those who live there as we possibly can.

In line with our corporate vision of “bringing compassion to life” our Compassion in Action Project Team has developed a fund-raising campaign to bring aid, over the long term, to victims of the Tsunami that caused widespread devastation in Asia on 26th December, 2004. The first step in this campaign is the relief walk that so many generously contributed to.

Our Tsunami Relief Walk raised in excess of $6000.

What charity are we supporting?

All monies raised from our fund-raising efforts will go directly to the Sisters of Charity in Sri Lanka who will in turn provide aid to those most in need.

Who are the Sisters of Charity?

The Sisters of Charity are a missionary Congregation that have worked in Sri Lanka since 1896. Opening their first mission station in Galle, the Sisters soon expanded to the West and 1908 saw the inauguration of the Matara Convent and the opening of St. Mary's School. As well as teaching, the Sisters also take care of the mentally handicapped in residential homes, orphans and destitute girls, students in Hostels and the Elderly in Homes and Day Care Centers.

Where will the money go?

Whilst the Sisters of Charity are working with many aspects of the Matara community, the money raised from MercyCare activities has been allocated to rebuilding and refurbishing St. Mary's School, which is the only Catholic school in the Dioscese of Galle and provides education to over 2000 children. When the tsunami hit, three tidal waves slammed into the school, bringing with it not only widespread devastation, but also a bus, truck, car and other vehicles. Sadly, one Sister, several staff members and many parents and school children were killed. Education cannot begin again in this district until the school is rebuilt and refurbished, thus the Sisters of Charity and MercyCare see this as a priority project.
