Preparing for Surgery
Some surgery requires specific preparation. On admission, your Nurse will explain and carry out any specific preparation required prior to your surgery.
If you have any questions or concerns, please discuss these with your Nurse.
Anaesthesia
Your Anaesthetist may visit you before your surgery to discuss the anaesthetic procedure. This will be a local, regional, or general anaesthetic. You must not drive a car within 24-hours of having a general anaesthetic. If you are having day surgery, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home.
Eating and Drinking
In most cases you will not be allowed food or drink for at least 6 hours prior to your surgery, however this must be discussed with your Specialist. If you have any questions about this and the taking of medication, please discuss this with your specialist.
Pain Relief
There are many options available to help our staff assist you in pain control. A detailed booklet on Pain Relief is avialable from your Nurse. Please take time to read it carefully. Our staff will discuss pain relief options with you prior to your surgery, and monitor you closely following your operation. Please ask your Nurse if you have any concerns regarding the management of your pain.
Valuables
Please do not bring any valuables or jewellery with you.
After the Operation
After surgery, you will be closely monitored by highly experienced staff in recovery, who will then arrange for your transfer to the Special Nursing Unit or clinical ward.
Our staff will communicate closely with your Surgeon and Anaesthetist with regard to your care so that your convalescence can be managed as smoothly as practicable.
If you have any concerns or ongoing pain, please advise your Nurse.
