Endoscopy Suite Staff Information for Patients

The Mercy Endoscopy Unit is a day-patient facility.

Most patients stay in the Unit for around three to four hours if they are having sedation during their procedure.

If you are having a colonoscopy, gastroscopy, it is highly likely that you will receive a form of sedation.

Sedated patients will need a responsible person to escort them home and stay with them overnight.

Instructions for patients undergoing procedures are outlined in the Mercy Endoscopy Unit Brochure which can be viewed or download here.

When you wake up from your procedure, have tolerated fluids and food and your observations are within an acceptable range, you are ready for discharge.

Patients normally remain in the Unit for one and a half hours after their procedure.

Your Doctor will speak to you before you go home.

If for some reason you need to stay overnight, this will be organised by our staff in consultation with your Gastroenterologist and you will be moved to another ward.

Written post-discharge instructions are provided for patients.

Following discharge, one of our staff will contact you by telephone the day following your procedure to check on how you are feeling.

Please contact the Mercy Endoscopy Unit on (08) 9370 9388 if you have any queries or concerns.
