Mercy Liver Service

The Mercy Liver Service located at Mercy Hospital, is a collaborative service run by Dr W Cheng, Dr L Crostella and Dr L Tarquinio, in addition to their normal Gastroenterology Services.

New and rapid advances in the management of liver diseases, in particular, chronic Viral Hepatitis have prompted the formalisation of this service to cater for the need of the community.

Hepatology is now a well-recognised subspeciality of Gastroenterology and requires additional expertise.

All three Gastroenterologists / Hepatologists have additional specialist training in Hepatology.

Dr Cheng at the University of Queensland and University of Southern California in USA, Dr Crostella at University College in London and Dr Tarquinio at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne in England.

Drs Cheng and Tarquinio are Consultant Hepatologists at Royal Perth Hospital and Visiting Consultants to the Liver Transplant Unit at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

The Mercy Liver Service will cater for liver diseases of all types, including Hepatitis B and C.

Currently patients with Hepatitis B are being treated at the Mercy Medical Centre, outside the teaching hospital setting, with the Mercy Pharmacy formally recognised as a Centre for Highly Specialised Drugs.

With the establishment of support services for the treatment of Hepatitis C (vital for successful completion of treatment), it is envisaged that this will soon become a reality at Mercy Liver Service.

With the formalisation of the new Mercy Liver Service, it is intended that the Mercy Medical Centre become a Centre of Excellence for the Management of Liver Diseases, in addition to being a Centre of Excellence for General Gastroenterology.

Pensioners and those with Health Cards are given special concessions.
