Day Surgery Unit
The Mission of the Day Surgery Unit is to provide safe, high quality nursing care, based on strong commitment to excellent clinical practice, education, innovation and teamwork.
This 20 bed purpose built Unit, with its extensive river views, provides a very comfortable, relaxed environment conducive for patient recover.
Information for Patients
Prior to admission to the Day Surgery Unit, we ask for your assistance in:
- Sending all documentation to Mercy Hospital Mount Lawley as soon as you can so we can prepare for your visit.
- Ensuring that you arrange for a responsible adult to collect you from the Day Surgery Unit and stay with you overnight.

Fasting
Please follow the fasting times given to you by your doctor.
Medications
Please contact your anaesthetist to discuss your current medications and ask which ones are to be taken prior to your surgery.
Day of Admission
Please have a shower prior to coming to hospital and remove any nail polish. Please leave all jewellery at home. Bring health fund cards, Medicare card and concession cards with you, any Doctors letters or notes, and any relevant x-rays. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Bring a magazine or book with you.
On arrival at the Day Surgery Unit, you will be greeted by our receptionist who will confirm your admission details. A nurse will then discuss your medical history and explain what will happen during your stay in the Day Surgery Unit.
Visitors
Please be advised that visitors are not permitted to accompany you past the waiting area of the Unit for comfort and privacy of other patients. We thank you for your understanding with this.
After Your Procedure
You will be closely monitored by nursing staff following your procedure. Once recovered you will be offered some light refreshment and prepared for your return home.
You are usually ready to go home two to four hours after you wake up. A nurse will provide written instructions and discuss these with both you and your carer prior to leaving the Day Surgery Unit.
After an Anaesthetic
- Take your usual medications unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
- Abstain from drinking alcohol for twenty-four hours.
- Do not drive a vehicle or operate machinery for twenty-four hours.
- Avoid making any important decisions or signing any important papers for twenty four hours.
