An enduring contribution

Found in: News & Events

Volunteers are the heart and soul of MercyCare and we are fortunate to work with such a committed group of individuals who so willingly donate their time, energy and talents to support our programs and people. One of those individuals is Jeannine Heinrichs, who recently completed her volunteer work with MercyCare after an incredible 23 years of service.

Jeannine first became involved with MercyCare when her mother was a resident in the Catherine McAuley Aged Care Centre. Impressed with the love and care shown to all residents by the Sisters of Mercy, she soon started volunteering her time at the centre. Jeannine went on to do some remarkable work for our aged care residents, including developing a music program specifically for residents with dementia. Jeannine would regularly visit the centre to play the piano while residents danced and sang along to well-known tunes from their younger years. The program was a great success and was renowned for lifting the spirits of residents living with dementia.

Having developed a keen interest in heritage after researching her own family, Jeannine soon became involved with maintaining the MercyCare Heritage and Information Service (still in a voluntary capacity). As an experienced librarian, she was well equipped for this role and her persistence and commitment to uncovering and preserving MercyCare’s history was truly exceptional.

As part of her work in this area, she played an instrumental role in the opening of the Heritage Trail on our Wembley site which established a permanent memorial to the Sisters of Mercy and continues to be enjoyed by visitors today. Her efforts were recognised when the MercyCare Heritage and Information Services team won the City of Subiaco’s Local History Award in 2009 for their booklet ‘Heritage Trail – A journey through the history of MercyCare’.

It has been our privilege to have Jeannine as part of our volunteer team and we extend our heartfelt thanks for her enduring contribution to MercyCare.
