"For the Good of the Mission" MercyCare book launch

On Thursday 17 September, nearly 70 guests were welcomed at MercyCare’s Residential Aged Care facility for a morning tea to celebrate the publication of The MercyCare Story – For the Good of the Mission.

For the Good of the Mission is the story of how and why MercyCare came into being in 2002 and how it has evolved over time. It includes personal stories and anecdotes from many of those who have shaped this organisation.

MercyCare Chief Executive Officer Chris Hall thanked author Marilyn Beresford for her ability to capture the stories behind the establishment of the organisation we now know as MercyCare. The complex and significant project started nearly three years ago and we are indebted to Marilyn for her willingness to take on this task which was exhaustive and challenging.

The book’s focus is three-fold. Firstly, it records a long and exceptional record of service to those suffering disadvantage and marginalisation in the Western Australian community. Secondly, it looks at the role played by the laity in the Perth Congregation’s institutions for over 150 years. This role became more intense over the years and culminated in the transfer of the Sisters’ health and community services to the new lay-led MercyCare. Finally, it gives an account of the way in which MercyCare has developed into an organisation for the 21st century.

Held in the heart of the original Wembley site, where so many of these stories took place, Archbishop of Perth, the Most Reverend Timothy Costelloe SDB took the opportunity to bless the new courtyard that the event was being held in.

For the Good of the Mission is available for purchase for $30. Please contact us on 08 9442 3444 or email to order your copy.
