In a tightly contested competition of midwives throughout the state, our very own Joan Wild from Mercy Hospital Mount Lawley has been announced as Johnson & Johnson Pacific (J&J) Midwife of the Year.

Annually J&J, with the support of the Australian College of Midwives has the JOHNSON\\\'S® baby Midwife of the Year Award - designed to recognise the constant and invaluable contributions made by midwives to safe motherhood across the country.

In total there were two hundred and thirty three nominations received by J&J for WA midwives. Joan received eleven of these nominations, the highest number ever recorded for a single midwife since the inception of the award 10 years ago. Mercy Hospital Mount Lawley has also taken out the award for having the most number of midwives nominated for 4 of these years.

Joan’s winning nomination from one of her patients at Mercy Hospital Mount Lawley was:

“I will never forget her ...... We feel so blessed to have been so well supported during the induction process which was long and difficult. Joan through every process explained things carefully and in a way we could understand so we could make the best decisions for ourselves at every stage.”

Joan, from West Perth has worked at Mercy Hospital Mount Lawley for 7 years, and been a practicing midwife since 1970 after completing her general and midwifery training in South Africa. When finding out that she had won the award, Joan said that ‘there are so many wonderful midwives in WA, I feel privileged to be recognised among them. I can only thank the new mothers who have felt my presence at their labour or during their post natal experience was such that they nominated me. My reward is to see families joy and confidence transitioning to the demands of motherhood and parenting with confidence’.

CEO of Mercy Hospital Mount Lawley, Garry England noted that ‘not only does this award recognise the tireless work that Joan and her midwife colleagues undertake on a daily basis, it also allows the parents who they are closely involved with to say thank you’.

The Family Birthing Unit at Mercy Hospital Mount Lawley has 6 delivery suites, and is supported by Perth’s leading obstetricians and dedicated staffs, which assists in more than 1400 deliveries annually.
