Launching the "Keys to Life Fund"

The 2016 MercyCare Oration offered the perfect setting for us to launch the Keys to Life Fund; our new fundraising initiative to unlock opportunities in our community for people seeking asylum.

Since this time, we have raised in excess of $10,000 thanks to the generosity of guests who attended the Oration and our Premier Partner HWL Ebsworth Lawyers who made a significant opening donation of $5,000 and will continue to raise funds through their workplace giving program.

MercyCare currently supports over 650 people seeking asylum in Western Australia. Through this work, we witness their incredible courage in escaping trauma and pursuing a better life. Unfortunately, due to a lack of resources, we also see the barriers they face.

The Keys to Life Fund aims to break down these barriers by providing targeted funding to bridge the gap to work, education and community connection. Through the fund, people seeking asylum will be able to access opportunities which are vital to their future, including, but not limited to:

  • English lessons to help gain access to employment or further education
  • Short skills-based courses in areas with employment prospects
  • Bridging courses to higher education
  • Driving lessons to increase mobility in the community
  • Sporting club involvement to promote community inclusion
  • Child care for parents trying to access any of the above opportunities

“Donating to the Keys to Life Fund is a way to participate in the solution because when you help the individual to success you also strengthen the community. It has my wholehearted endorsement.”
