Make it: DIY bird feeder

MercyCare Ballajura Early Learning Centre manager Amanda Andrew said children at the centre make different kinds of bird feeders, which are hung up in the surrounding trees for local birds to enjoy.

“We make beaded ones which get fruit scraps put in them for the birds to eat,” Amanda said. “At Christmas, we make bird feeders using pine cones, which are rolled in honey and bird seed.”

What you need:

  • Pine cones
  • Honey
  • Small bowls
  • Popsticks
  • Paper plate
  • bird seed
  • twine
  • scissors

Directions:

  1. Pour honey into a small bowl.
  2. Next, pour birdseed into a separate bowl.
  3. Cut twine into sections about 20cm long.
  4. Using a popstick, spread honey onto a pine cone.
  5. Next, sprinkle bird seed onto the pine cone so it sticks to the honey.
  6. Lastly, tie the twine around the top of the pine cone and hang it from a tree or hook for the birds to enjoy!
