Mercy Village Residents Honour Michael and Carmel

On Wednesdays at Mercy Village, things tend to be quiet, but this particular Wednesday was an exception. As a means of showing their gratitude to Michael and Carmel, who played an integral part in social aspects of village life, residents surprised the couple with a morning tea in their honour. As they had recently moved into residential aged care, the morning left them feeling unbelievably grateful for the outpouring of love and support they received from everyone.

The residents came together in their Sunday best and contributed to a beautiful morning tea. The love and joy in the room was palpable, with years of memories being shared over coffee and treats.

Michael and Carmel arrived at Mercy Village as two of the first four residents in December 2005. Since their arrival, they have been instrumental in many of the social aspects of the village, taking it into their hands to ensure themselves and those around them enjoyed every moment of retirement. It was clear that view was shared by many.

From a carport, the social club grew. Michael served as the first president and held numerous positions during his tenure. In addition, he initiated Melbourne Cup sweeps and footy tipping. For 15 years, Carmel was the choirmaster of Village Voices and the foundation of village entertainment.

“We decided we wouldn’t just sit on our rocking chairs; we promised ourselves we would do something – and I think we did”, said Michael as cheers erupted.

Michael and Carmel proved that retirement could be a new adventure and have had a lasting impression on everyone they have met. This was not goodbye or farewell, but thank you, thank you for the commitment and time to the village happenings.
