Our Mini Chefs made Indian cookies during Harmony Week!

Learning how to make Rotana cookies carries on from a week of learning all about Indian culture.

These cookies have been cooked for centuries and it’s often a custom for married girls to bring the cookies from their mother’s house as a show of good luck and a healthy future.

The ingredients for these cookies are: multigrain flour, jaggery (cane sugar), fennel powder, green cardamom powder and coconut powder.

First, the ingredients were placed on a plate and educators spoke to the children about what they were and how they will be used.

After donning their chef aprons and hats, the children took their turn to explore the ingredients.

They smelt and tasted the ingredients first and then took turns pouring the ingredients in to the bowl and mixing it all together.

Educators then helped them to knead the dough, and then showed them how to take apart a small amount of dough in their hand and roll it together in a round shape.

The round dough was then placed on a special wooden stamp and children were encouraged to press it until it took the shape of stamp designs.

The cookies were set aside for a few minutes before they were deep fried by the educators.

When the cookies were ready, the children noticed that they have turned a lovely golden brown colour!

The cooking session also exercised their fine motor skills through kneading the dough and stamping the cookies with the mould, while also helping to strengthen finger and hand muscles.

Needless to say the cookies were a hit – with the children enjoying eating them as much as making them!
