The Strength of a Family Bond

After 41 years together, Val wanted to ensure Chris could remain independent in their family home. Though Val was aware that the days ahead might not look like they once did, she was determined to maintain some semblance of normality for Chris. Val was dedicated to keeping Chris in the home they both loved for as long as possible.

“Christ had been stuck in a rut for a while and would seem to go downhill more frequently,” Val explained.

“The most noticeable was after our last trip back to America in June 2022 to visit family and friends. It was our last opportunity to see our family. It was good but at the same time quite traumatic.”

With the recommendation of Chris’ doctor, Val called MercyCare in search of programs available to Chris. Still trying to figure out what to expect, Val spoke to a few people. The assessments were booked in, all the necessary tests and checks were made, and they were welcomed into the Short-Term Restorative Care program to transition them into MercyCare’s Home Care program.

“I didn’t want someone to do everything for him, that’s what I am here for, but the assistance to keep him moving was my main priority.”

“The staff have been incredible! Thanks to the support and assistance of the STRC team, Nicky, Rob, Siobhan, Althea, and Tina have made the transition in keeping Chris at home for longer possible.”

Through the program, Siobhan, Chris’ Occupational Therapist, introduced an array of items in the household to make life easier and accessible for Chris and Val. One of these introductions was to noise-cancelling headphones and an online music program, transporting him through music to unlock lost memories.

Rob, Chris’ Physiotherapist, regularly takes Chris out for walks to keep him moving or puts him through his paces with exercises to keep him upright and mobile.

To assist both Siobhan and Rob’s efforts, Althea was brought in as an external provider who, through music therapy, would use music that brings Chris joy and, through small movements and dance, keep him moving.

“We have been doing life together for almost 41 years, through wars and service, across different countries. The Short-Term Restorative Care and smooth transition to the Home Care program have allowed us to stay together longer and offered me additional support I hadn’t realised I needed.”
