Working with children brings joy to volunteer Maria

Currently in Australia on a Humanitarian visa, Maria reached out to MercyCare in search of opportunities which allowed her to continue her work in the childcare space.

“The Red Cross recommend me to MercyCare Migrant Services to assist me with steps to help myself into the workforce,” she said.

“I have worked with children before in my home country and also while I was in transit in Trinidad and Tobago, where I was for a while before coming to Australia.”

After expressing her interest in working with children, Maria was offered a volunteer placement at MercyCare Ballajura Early Learning Centre.

“Working with children is something that I like and enjoy, maybe in the future I hope Early Learning could be my permanent job,” Maria said.

Volunteering since April, Maria now attends the centre every Tuesday.

MercyCare Ballajura Centre Manager Kelly Meyn said Maria has been a real asset to the team and is well-liked by both the staff and the children.

“Maria loves playing with the children in our outdoor area,” Kelly said.

“She enjoys playing car games and imaginary monster play with the kindy children.”
