Derby Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation (DASSA)
The DASSA aims to provide affordable, safe and culturally appropriate short term accommodation for families and individuals visiting Derby from surrounding communities. Accommodation can be provided for a period of up to four weeks; after this time, further arrangments can be made.
Priority access will be given to Aboriginal people visiting from surrounding communities who need access to services such as:
- Funeral attendances
- Reconnection with family and land
The DASSA is a secure, drug and alcohol free premises. Two full meals a day are provided, as well as sheets, towels and laundry facilities, recreational facilities and barbecue areas. Assistance from Aboriginal Support Workers is also available to help set up appointments with services such as Money Management Services, Department of Child Protection, Centrelink, Winun Ngari Employment Services, Derby Aboriginal Health Service, Derby District High School etc. They are also available to assist with forms and guide you through the booking/check-in process.
- What is the DASSA? DASSA stands for Derby Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation. DASSA caters for Aboriginal people visiting Derby for a short period of time. They may be visiting Derby for business, medical, cultural, judicial or family reasons. The DASSA service is a short stay (maximum of 28 days) facility and not a long-term accommodation option.
- How long can people stay at the DASSA? Short-term (maximum of 28 days) accommodation is available.
- How big is DASSA? DASSA can accommodate up to 54 guests. It has 30 units with 60 beds in total.
- Is DASSA only for Aboriginal people? DASSA is an Aboriginal specific service. Non-Aboriginal guests who are accompanying an immediate family member, or who are providing direct support to the Aboriginal clients, are eligible to stay at the facility.
- Is the DASSA accessible for people with disabilities? Yes, there are 6 accessible units. Family, double bed and single bed units are available. If required and subject to availability, carers can be accommodated in the unit next door.
- Does DASSA provide transport options? DASSA staff are able to provide transport for guests traveling to appointments with outside services i.e. Centrelink, Money Management etc. when practical. However, we do not provide a shuttle service.
- Who is managing the service? MercyCare have been appointed as managers of the DASSA. Department of Communities will manage the contract with MercyCare. MercyCare will operate onsite management of the facility and offer support services for guests.
- How do I make a booking at the DASSA? In person, by telephone, through email or via referral from an agency.
- What are the reception opening hours? 8am - 9pm, Monday to Sunday. An after hours Night Porter is on site after 9pm to assist with enquiries.

Daily and weekly rates available for adults and children. Special discounted rates if you have a health care card and for families. Children under three stay for free.
Included in rates per night include accomodation breakfast and evening meal.
