Celebrating 175 years

9 January 2021

On 9 January 1846, seven young women left their home in Dublin, Ireland and travelled across the world to Perth, Australia.

Led by Sister Ursula Frayne, these pioneering Sisters of Mercy wasted no time getting to work, opening new schools and caring for people from all walks of life. Together, these remarkable women forged a legacy that would have a lasting impact on the Western Australian community.

175 years later, MercyCare is proud to continue their work, supporting Western Australian families and communities to thrive.

See historic pictures of Perth and read the Sisters’ incredible journey, from rolling side to side on the good ship Elizabeth to walking up the “dusty quiet country road” of St Georges Terrace here.
