Characters and Heroes brought to life for Children’s Book Week

MercyCare Early Learning Centres have been celebrating Children’s Book Week®. The theme for 2023 was Read, Grow, Inspire.

Janene Heron, Operations Manager for Early Learning Services, explained the purpose of the initiative in our centres.

“Book week is an exciting celebration of literature and imagination where children and educators get to dress up as a book character that encourages a deeper connection with their favourite book.

“It’s an opportunity to promote the importance of reading and the joy you can gain from it to our children, families and community.”

Highlights from across MercyCare

MercyCare Heathridge Early Learning Centre

The children and educators went all in with their costumes and activities to celebrate Book Week. We saw everything from old favourites Mickey Mouse and Wally to new celebrities Elsa and Harry Potter.

Activities accompanied booking readings throughout the week, including a Where is the green sheep activity, a tea party, Rainbow Fish and Bear Hunt.

A favourite among the children was the Room on the Broom activity, which included potion making.

MercyCare Thornlie Early Learning Centre

Educators and children got in to the spirit with some fantastic costumes including a fairy, Goldilocks, a dragon and a minion.

Last week, the children were discussing the national football team The Matildas which prompted one of the Kindy children to make the observation that educator Amber looked exactly like “The principal from the Matilda movie”. This inspired the Miss Trunchbull and Matilda costumes shown below!

MercyCare Landsdale Early Learning Centre

Landsdale got creative with some awesome activities organised by the Educators for Children’s Book Week.

The Kindy room designed a library corner, where children could loan out books, engage with the computer lab, listen to audio books or just kick back and relax to read.

Children got their hands dirty with art projects, book-related sensory trays and activities. This was supplemented by learning about the importance of reading.

A dress up day topped off the week, with parents volunteering for a book reading during mat sessions.

MercyCare Banksia Grove Early Learning Centre

Fun was the focus at Banksia grove, with some very cute costumes including a Peter theme, in Pan and Rabbit form.

The activities throughout the week focused on language development, communication and wonder. Educators set up a reading corner for families to share their favourite stories and relax.

MercyCare Bassendean Early Learning Centre

An animal theme took over Bassendean with Old McDonald leading the charge of a butterfly, parrots, hungry caterpillars and 101 dalmatians.

Activities throughout the week included a varied sensory Tuff Tray, book readings and recreations of book covers.

MercyCare Wembley Early Learning Centre

Some of the best Educator costumes for the week came from Wembley. The staff and children enjoyed showing off their favourite books with the incredible butterfly representing the conclusion to many, many hungry caterpillars.
