Kelmscott residents rock the dance floor

Iconic Perth entertainer Glenn Levi hosted the dance extravaganza, stepping in as a DJ, singer and dance teacher as he performed a string of famous 50s and 60s hits and demonstrated some basic jive dance moves.

Some residents were so immersed in the music that they abandoned their walkers to hit the dance floor hand-in-hand with staff and rock the night away to their favourite tunes from artists including Elvis Presley, His Comets, The Rolling Stones and Little Richard.

MercyCare Kelmscott’s Lifestyle, Therapy and Spirituality Coordinator Tracy Molloy said the idea for the party came from a staff member who worked closely with residents.

“Our Physiotherapist Maddie asked what music most of our residents listened to as teenagers and voila the idea was born,” Tracy said.

“I then contacted Glenn Levi to see whether he could squeeze in an evening gig for me knowing that he plays that era of music and also knowing that he and his wife Tracy do the Jive and swing dancing, and he said yes.”

The invitation also was extended to staff, volunteers and the residents’ family members, who Tracy had encouraged to dress the part.

Thankfully they didn’t disappoint, with many turning up in their best 50s and 60s attire and one staff member even donating decorations to fit the party theme.

The night turned out to be a memorable one for residents, so much so that Tracy said it was the topic of conversation for days afterwards.

“Everyone had such a good time,” Tracy said.

“Residents and staff are still talking about it now and the feedback for the night was so positive.

“Their smiling faces says it all – they had fun and enjoyed reminiscing about the good ole days.”
