Every Thursday, Cindy Baker dedicates her time to run a much-loved knitting group at our Kelmscott Residential Aged Care Centre, giving residents the chance to keep enjoying a hobby as a creative outlet.
“I am so pleased that the knitting club is happy,” Cindy says.
Under Cindy’s guidance, the group’s first project saw residents team up to create a giant teddy bear – each person knitting their own piece before bringing it all together. The shared goal gave everyone something to work towards, and the finished bear became a proud group achievement.
As well as bringing warmth, connection and creativity to residents, Cindy saw an opportunity for the knitting club to give back to the wider community. Since she also volunteers at an after-school club at a local Primary School, she cleverly brought the two groups together – the residents handmade beanies for the children who attend.
More recently, Cindy organised a special outing for the group to Spotlight, which generously donated wool and knitting needles for the day. Residents enjoyed browsing the store, choosing their own supplies, and sharing plenty of laughs along the way.
Volunteers like Cindy make an extraordinary difference. Her dedication, compassion and enthusiasm have helped create opportunities for connection that leave a lasting impact on our residents.
“It’s lovely to spend time with everyone,” Cindy says.
“I’ve also had the chance to meet other volunteers, who were genuinely interested in what we’re doing.”
