Gwennie celebrates 104 year milestone

Many people would rejoice celebrating their 104th birthday but for Gwennie Overton, who turns 104 on July 3, marking the incredible milestone is “just another number”.

“It’s just another number to me,” Gwennie laughed. “I feel pretty good.”

Described by staff at MercyCare Maddington Residential Aged Care Home as a chatty lady with a good sense of humour, Gwennie has a colourful story to tell when she reflects on the life she has lived so far.

Born in the Goldfield town of Norseman and growing up with three brothers and a sister, Gwennie met her husband Bill, a farmer, at a local dance and they married in 1937.

Together they had a son, Edward. She is also a proud grandmother to Edward, Anthony, Timothy and Casey.

When it comes to sharing stories from her life, Gwennie loves to reminisce about her time working as a truck driver transporting cattle.

“I used to drive (cattle) stock down to Midland for the farmers,” she recalled.

“I loved the look on the men’s faces when they see a little woman like me get out of the driver’s seat of the truck. They weren’t expecting that.”

Gwennie has been a beloved resident at MercyCare Maddington Aged Care Home for the past three and a half years and is looking forward to sharing her birthday celebrations during a special morning tea with fellow residents and staff.

It is hoped that family members will also be able to attend the celebrations depending on COVID-19 restrictions.

“I just want everyone to join in on the birthday celebrations,” Gwennie said when asked how she’d like to celebrate.

Asked what life wisdom she would impart on younger generations, Gwennie had some sound advice.

“I’ve been taught to take things at they come,” she said.

“I’ve learnt not to expect too much of everyday and do the best you can, and let bygones be bygones.

“Each day is another day, just do the best you can with it.”

Maddington Service Manager Michele Murdoch described Gwennie as a treasured resident who has many colourful stories to tell.

“We feel so privileged to be able to celebrate such an incredible milestone with the lovely Gwennie,” Michele said.

“It is very special for the Maddington team to be a part of Gwennie’s 104th birthday and we’ll be making sure she feels extra special on her big day.”
