International Nurses Day, which takes place this Friday 12 May, is an opportunity to thank nurses for the incredibly important work they do in our community.
Beckie Brownrigg is a highly experienced registered nurse, who has been providing care to the community for 25 years and is now caring for MercyCare’s aged care clients, as part of our Home Care team.
Beckie was inspired to become a nurse after hearing stories from her mother about her own nursing career; she was also very good at science, and loves people, so a career in nursing seemed like a natural fit.
In recent years, Beckie had been looking for a role that allowed her to balance her work and home life, so after many years in hospital settings, last year she made the move to home care nursing.
However, working in home care is about more than convenience for Beckie, who feels a strong connection with her clients.
“Aged care has a special place in my heart. I have quite elderly parents, and I like to think that they are being treated with the same respect and care that I show every one of our clients,” said Beckie.
“I really enjoy getting to know the clients, finding out what they need, and helping them to be confident in their homes, so that they can maintain their independence for as long as possible.”
Beckie believes that nursing is the best job in the world and tells anyone considering the career to take the leap!
“Nursing is so diverse, and there’s so many roles and opportunities available. I’ve travelled the world as a nurse and worked in lots of different countries, plus there’s always a role to suit your needs and interests.”
Time off for Beckie often involves a visit to her happy place – the ocean, where she can be found walking her dog, or even trying out sunset yoga. Renewed and refreshed, she then brings that joy back into her client’s homes each day for MercyCare.
