Jesse’s Story: Finding Confidence, Passion and Purpose Through Helping Others

There’s something special about seeing a person doing exactly what they love and for Jesse, that is volunteering every Friday at MercyCare Ellenbrook Early Learning Centre. Alongside her is Candice, her support worker, who has been there to encourage and support Jesse throughout her volunteering journey.

Before finding her place at MercyCare, Jesse explored different opportunities through work and volunteering, including time in an office environment. But it quickly became clear that her passion was in hands-on work, building connections and being around people.

Opportunities like volunteering can play an important role in building confidence, skills, and pathways into future employment for people who may face additional barriers to finding work. Alongside her volunteering and work, Jesse is also studying to continue growing her skills in childcare, progressing toward her career goals.

When asked what her favourite part of volunteering is, Jesse simply couldn’t choose.

“Pretty much everything.”

Whenever a child is upset, Jesse is often the first to notice and the first to offer comfort.

“She’s a calming influence,” Candice shared. “As soon as Jesse sees a child upset, she’ll go straight to help them.”

One of the most heartwarming parts of Jesse’s experience has been the connection she’s built with the children themselves.

“There’s no bias with the kids,” a Candice explained. “They don’t look at her with a disability. It’s lovely to watch Jessie interact with them and see her smile when they’re playing.”

Over time, Jesse’s confidence has continued to grow. Each visit has seen her become more engaged, more independent, and more eager to help wherever she can.

“She’s really kicked up a gear each time she comes in,” Candice said.

This Volunteer Week, we celebrate people like Jesse, whose compassion and dedication make a meaningful difference every single day. Her story is a reminder that volunteering is not only about helping others – it’s also about connection, confidence, and finding joy in what you do.
