MercyCare is proud to partner with Bundiyarra Aboriginal Community Aboriginal Corporation to support the opening of Bundiyarra Regional Aboriginal Community Kinship Stay (BRACKS) in Geraldton, Western Australia’s fourth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation service.
The new facility will provide safe, culturally appropriate and affordable accommodation for Aboriginal people visiting Geraldton and the Mid West Gascoyne region.
MercyCare has worked alongside Bundiyarra to support the development of BRACKS, contributing governance guidance, mentoring and capacity-building informed by its experience delivering Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation services across Western Australia.
The new BRACKS facility features 44 accommodation units, including single and twin rooms, family units and universally accessible options, with capacity to host up to 100 guests for stays of up to 28 days. Guests will also have access to meals, laundry services and transport support where needed.
Located on Bundiyarra land at the corner of Blencowe Road and Eastward Road in Utakarra, the site holds deep cultural significance and has long served as a resting place for travellers to the region.
Construction of the facility was led by Mid-West Gascoyne builder and Registered Aboriginal Business GBSC Yurra Pty Ltd, creating significant local employment opportunities, including for Aboriginal tradespeople.
BRACKS joins existing Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation services operating in Kalgoorlie, Derby and Broome, strengthening the network of culturally safe accommodation options across the state.
