Mimi’s Story: Rediscovering Independence Through Disability Support

When Mimi experienced a stroke, her world shifted overnight. Like many people navigating life after a major health event, Mimi faced challenges not only physically but emotionally, especially when it came to rebuilding her confidence and sense of independence.

With the support of our Disability Services team, Mimi found the support and practical assistance she needed to begin regaining control of her daily life.

“When I met Mimi personally, she reminded me that this could happen to us. Previously she was travelling, working and enjoying her life.” — Liz Gashaw, MercyCare Area Coordinator, Disability Services

Mimi’s support workers assist with everyday living activities, mobility, and gentle rehabilitation exercises. Each step is taken at Mimi’s own pace. This approach has allowed Mimi to feel safe, supported, and empowered through every stage of her recovery.

Mimi’s husband Craig had an initial meeting with our team to develop an NDIS plan, understanding how we can best support Mimi’s unique interests and needs.

“It has taken a massive load from me, mentally, physically and emotionally, and I don’t have to worry. It’s the best thing that’s ever happened in our lives, knowing MercyCare.” Craig, Mimi’s Husband
