What is a Home Care Package?
A Home Care Package is a selection of services that support people to continue living at home independently and safely. You can select health and home services that best suit your needs – you have full control, choice and flexibility over your home care.
Am I eligible?
Home Care Packages are available to people over 65, or over 50 years for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people and those experiencing or at risk of homelessness, who need services to help them live at home.
The need for services is different for everyone. You might need a bit of help with your home and garden maintenance, assistance with your shopping and transport or some helpaccessing physiotherapy and podiatry.
A Home Care Package can provide you with supports to assist you with your specific areas of need.
How to apply?
If you have home care needs and would like to access government subsidies, you will need to arrange an assessment. This can be done by contacting My Aged Care by calling 1800 200 422 or online at www.myagedcare.gov.au
If your care needs indicate you may be eligible for a Home Care, My Aged Care will organise a free face-to-face assessment. My Aged Care will contact you with the outcome of your assessment, the level of care you have been approved for and estimated wait time. Home Care Packages range from Level 1 to Level 4.
It is likely you will need to wait for your Home Care Package once it has been approved. Get in touch with us if this is the case and we can discuss other possibilities.
What’s the difference between Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) and a Home Care Package (HCP)?
Depending on the level of support you need, My Aged Care will allocate you with either the low-level support of the Commonwealth Home Support Program, or the higher-level Home Care Package.
Many people use CHSP when they need low-level support. As their needs become more intensive or complex, requiring some case management assistance, they can be referred for a Home Care Package. With CHSP your funding is only for specific services, like cleaning or personal care, and can’t be transferred to a different type of service without a reassessment. With a Home Care Package, your funding is flexible and can be used on whichever services you require.
Home Care Package Value
Each level of Home Care Package provides a different subsidy amount depending on your required level of care. If you choose MercyCare as your provider, we then deliver the services required to keep you living independently in your own home.
The four Home Care Package levels are structured as follows:
- Level 1 – for people with basic care needs (e.g. help with house cleaning, meals, running errands and transport. ) Worth $8,270.90
- Level 2 – for people with low-level care needs (e.g. help with daily living and professional medical support) Worth $15,045.30
- Level 3 – for people with intermediate care needs (e.g. help with daily living and higher medical support) Worth $33,076.30
- Level 4 – for people with high-level care need (e.g. access to high level and complex nursing care) Worth $50,286.05
What to do once you have been approved for a Home Care Package?

Once you have been assessed and approved for a Home Care Package you can start looking for an approved home care provider.
When searching for a home care provider, important factors are choice, flexibility, compassion, professional staff and a proven track record. It is important to find a provider that suits you and your specific needs.
