This Friday marks a significant milestone for MercyCare and the women and children we support in the Kimberley.
The Cook Government’s $4.2 million commitment to expand family and domestic violence (FDV) crisis accommodation will see Catherine House, Broome, upgraded and repurposed into a second FDV refuge.
MercyCare is honoured to be entrusted with delivering this new service.
Our teams walk alongside women and children in the Kimberley, listening to their stories, advocating for their safety and pushing for more support where it’s needed most. This new refuge is a direct reflection of that advocacy.
“We saw a need, gave a voice to the vulnerable, and never stopped fighting for better options,” said Jennie Burns, Executive Director, Family and Community Services.
This expansion represents hope and will provide vital support while long-term infrastructure is developed, ensuring women and children in Broome and surrounding communities have a safe place to rebuild when they need it most.
We are incredibly proud of what MercyCare has achieved, and grateful to our teams, our government and delivery partners and the community who helped make today possible.
For us, this announcement is a step forward in our long-standing commitment to ending FDV and supporting regional communities. It aligns with our vision that every person deserves safety, dignity and the chance to heal.
Together, we’re building a safer future for women and children in the Kimberley.
