Step by Step team awarded for ‘compassion’ in supporting CaLD community

The Step By Step is a federally-funded program under the Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS) Services and Mercy Care delivers it as a lead organisation in partnership with Save the Children (54 Reasons) and the Edmund Rice Centre of WA.

The service provides wraparound support for newly arrived refugees in their first five years in Australia. 

Samira Husic General Manager Multicultural Support Services said it was great to see the hard work of the Step By Step team recognised.

“Compassion and courage are values our teams live and breathe,” she said.

“We show compassion in working with service users, have courage to walk alongside the service user and advocate for them despite the barriers they face.”

The Innovation Excellence Award recognises a person or team who demonstrates innovation and makes a positive difference at MercyCare and the community.

“As a team, we continuously work hard to support our service users and feels great to be recognised,” she said.

“It was a very proud moment for the team, consortium partners and managers. It was something we were not expecting but we are so grateful for the recognition.”

Since its inception in 2019, the Step By Step team have made a significant difference in the lives of refugees who arrive to Australia under the National Humanitarian Entrant Program, with provides casework support with settlement needs, learning English, accessing education and training and finding employment.

“The Step By Step Team helps our service users to see how resilient they are and become more aware of their strengths.

“This then helps them realise that they can overcome the challenges before them and thrive.”
